This was once a huipil from the village of Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala where they are known for their huipiles filled with hand-embroidered birds.  This piece has been made into a tzute or carrying cloth but probably used for ceremonial purposes.  The neck opening has been filled in with the suns rays and the corner tassels have been added.  It has also been overdyed to give it the earthy tone.  Very interesting piece.
